My exam was extremely short. He didt find anything wrong. I went to dr burns at asssociates in neurology through providence. I know my anxiety has the best of me right now but ever since this has been going on (about 1 month) I have noticed sooo many symptoms, starting with a hand twitch leading to twitches all over but mainly in my legs. They are literally there all the time when I'm sitting or laying down. I've also noticed excess saliva and constant phlegm. I don't know if symptoms can progress this fast but from what I've read on here anything is possible. I just have to hold out till my emg next week.
What are your symptoms? How old are you/your kids? My brothers girlfriend is from rochester and I used to go to oakland univ. Small world. Keep in touch as I'm definitely in need of support as I've only told my husband and best friend about everything

Hi,
my husband graduated from OU as well! My story is to long and complex, you can go to my page and look under my 'threads' started to read the looooong journey I have been on. Have you had your thyroid checked? It can cause alot of what you speak about. In hindsight alot of my sx started while pregnant. My calfs felt funny, tight and sore, and feet hurt. I thought it was just veins and being pregnant. Also felt a drastic change in stamina, I assumed that it was baby, even though in my other 2 pregnancies I worked out at gym untill a few weeks prior to birth. I could not do anything! You can pm me if you need to talk.

Hi;

It's good that you have scheduled the EMG because it will give you the peace of mind you need. The best of luck to you next Wed; you'll be in my prayers..try to relax as much as you can before then.

Angie

Thank you both so much for your support. I am trying my best to keep a straight mind through this.

Twitching during pregnancy, could be hormonal. I am going through peri/menopause and many on the board I frequent have the same issues.

I really would like to think hormones are thwe cause of my twitching. My ob/gyn didn't seem to think so. My symptoms have just been getting worse though. I'm going back for an emg on the side they didn't do next wed. Thanks for your concern.

Hi;

I was just wondering how you made out this past Wed for your EMG on the other side. Also wanted to reassure you that I also had twitching when I was pregnant and when I brought it up to my OB/GYN she said that it is not uncommon. Also, I can tell you with all certainty that stress and anxiety will most definately magnify and multiply symptoms that you are worried about. I'm not saying that they are not real, I can just tell you that anytime I have worried about a particular illness, without fail I develop the symptoms that go right along with them. It is amazing how much our minds control our bodies. I wish you only the best and pray that you will get through this with a healthy you and a healthy baby too.

I had the emg yesterday and it was normal. It was done on my left side (shoulder area , bicep, tricep, forearm hand and leg). I didnt get a printout of the results, but the neuro said it was normal and that there is nothing that is evident of nmd. Meanwhile, I have been getting tongue fascics, continuous twitching, feeling of weakness on my left and right arm, and muscle soreness for no reason. I have read so much on here that people have normal emg's but a few months later they turn out abnormal. I don't know where to go from here. I have an appt with a neuro muscular specialist in the middle of august that took a month to get an appt for and my husband told me no way am i going since my emg was normal. He and everyone else thinks this is all in my head. I wish it was. What do you think of the tongue fascics? I get them on the sides, and in the middle of the tongue. Its so scary that I have these symptoms. I just want life to go back to normal and be able to raise my daughter and think of the future with my family and baby to be. Thank you for your support. This forum has such wonderful people.

katmomma ... so glad your emg came out normal. That is great news.

It is my understanding that benign tongue fascics are very common. Unless you are having trouble speaking or swallowing, they are not a cause for concern.

Take care ...

I also wanted to add that I don't think the emg picked up any fascics. I guess I'm confused on how emg's work. Does it matter if no fascics were picked up? Also, how exact do they have to be with the needle? Like lets say he tested my left shoulder muscle but was an inch or two away from where I would get a twitch normally...would that be cause for concern that he couldve missed something.

Hi Kat;

I'm so glad that all went well for you with your most recent EMG. I think you can rest assure that based on your test result, your twitching is benign so that must give you some peace of mind. I have had ongoing body-wide twitching (including tongue) for over 2 years or longer, although it has increased in the last couple of years, and I have also have achiness and cramps in my right calf/foot but my neuro assures me that if the EMG comes back clean, which it did, then there is no reason to think it could be anything serious. I know what you mean though about trying to put it behind you and moving on because no one likes to waste precious time on worry; I still worry, but I have to keep reminding myself that I am fine and also that I really have no control over the future and what might happen so it makes sense to me to just be thankful for today and try not to worry about tomorrow. I wish you only the best and hope you can find peace each and every day. Take care
Angie

Kat,

Congrats on the clean EMG! I had the worst calf cramps when I was pregant, I used to jump up screaming. The cramp went away but my
calf would be sore for days. That was way before i had other symptoms. I still don't have a diagnosed of anything.

Tell your husband that you need to go to the nueromusclar specialist in August for peace of mind. Try to make a promise to yourself and him
that if he gives you the OK that everything is OK you will stop thinking something so serious is going on.

Hang in there,

Katmomma I think you are worrying unecessarily. There are so many reasons for the symptoms you are having, and I don't think any of them are serious or life threatening. I have had 6 healthy pregnancies with sciadica a time or two, heartburn, rashes, charlie horses in the legs, back aches etc. Talk to your obstetrician about all these things.

Also, my husband has ALS, now diagnosed for nearly two years. He hasn't ever mentioned pain anywhere, sore leg muscles, stiffness as you tell it,, feelings of weakness, or muscle aches. He wakes up with curled fingers, has muscle tightness (his words) and staggers and loses his balance. He also doesn't breathe when he sleeps and must have a machine working for him. He tires and strains for breath on much exertion like trying to mow the lawn with a walk-behind mower. These symptoms are not like you have described. He also had an abnormal EMG and blood tests.

Please put this forum out of reach and listen to your family physician if you are indeed told you are fine. You must put this idea to rest very soon, for the sake of your entire family, not just your unborn child. Take care. God bless.

Thank you all for being so supportive. I know I really should let this go . My husband and I just got into a big argument over it. It's terrible, i just feel like you know when something is wrong with your body. I do have a question regarding emg's though...My emg didn't pick up any fascics...lets say I get them in my shoulder muscle, and the needle was just a little bit away from where they would normally be, if it was something concerning, would something have been found, or does the needle have to be directly on the spot where the fascics normally are?

An EMG can miss fascics in a large muscle.

BUT - listen to me, OK?

Fascics really don't mean anything since they are so common. There are a lot of people here that wish their EMG picked up only a fascic. I've had them for over 20 years now, gazillions of them, and never once have they been picked up on an EMG. In fact, the 5 I have had have been perfectly normal.

Do not concern yourself with twitches. Irritating? In the beginning yes. Evidence of ALS? No.
