I am newly diagnosed 68 yr old female and am deeply depressed by my diagnoses- bulbar ALS moderately aggressive. Speech is declining rapidly. I currently take sertraline and have lorazepam for bad days, but I am scared and sad and can’t stop crying. It all feels so helpless. I have a wonderful husband of 45 years but it feels like more than we can bear.

I am so very sorry.

I do see you were diagnosed this month so at the very most it has been 3 weeks. The first few weeks are particularly terrible Usually after that you start to see there is life after diagnosis- not the one you planned but one where you can hopefully find some joy.

I hope you have a great clinic. May I ask if nuedexta was discussed? It can help transiently with bulbar symptoms though it is indicated for the emotional lability common in ALS.

There is also no shame in counseling - for both of you.

Have you looked into support organizations like ccals?

Feel free to “ vent” here.

I am so sorry as well, and I too have Bulbar onset.

As Nikki mentioned, the Nuedexta greatly has helped me, as I too had the emotional lability, and constant crying....

The beginning months are definitely the hardest as you navigate through this life changing diagnosis.

My speach as well is nearly gone, but have gotten used to carrying my "boogie board" (writing board) with me everywhere.

This forum is so helpful, getting other people's experiences and advice.

We are here for you ❤️

I'm very sorry, Hutch. As Nikki and Serenity say, there is life left to live. You will find the best ways to do that, together.
