I have discovered over the last few weeks that I am bruising more easily, and not by the usual method of bumping in to things. It seems to be a result of muscle use. For example, I lifted a very light load (2lbs?) of wood and felt a "pop' in my left bicep and saw a tiny deep blue bruise- which spread over the course of a few days to about an inch in diameter. I also seem to have them around my knee joints and on the insides of my lower thighs- more on my most affected leg muscles.

Can spasticity cause bruising through overuse of muscles?

I have very recently had a broad blood panel taken and my iron/platelet levels and the like are all mid range and not an issue. the only difference seems to be a high LDL cholesterol level- but my bp is quite low and high cholesterol is prevalent on both sides of my (very long lived) family, so no major concern to the doctor. I take a variety of vitamins and supplements and have not changed my medication.

Thanks for any thoughts-

Fiona

I have had similar issues over the years. Before I began seeing my Neurologist in 2011, I was having very frequent, (what I called) painful muscle tears in my calves. They would occur without warning and just while walking normally. Each "tear" would cause some bleeding under the skin and take about 3 weeks to resolve but, of course, I would get others during that time. When I had so many unusual symptoms that I could not ignore I began seeing my Neurologist at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. He immediately started me on Baclofen for all of my spasticity issues and lo and behold the muscle tears stopped. I was diagnosed with PLS in 2013 and have remained on Baclofen with good results. I thought that I would never have another muscle tear until about 8 months ago. I was standing still and leaned my trunk over slightly to reach for something and was hit with the most searing tearing pain in my right calf. I was unable to walk on leg for several days and was checked for a DVT (which was negative). Significant leg swelling occurred along with a dark bruise covering the whole back of my calf from behind my knee to my ankle. So, now I am always conscious of putting any undo strain on my calves in hopes of preventing that from every happening again. I currently use a walker at all times and a wheelchair for any distance beyond my house to the car. I'm not sure this has helped but at least you know that other people have experienced this. Thanks Nancy
