There have been several posts supporting fasting to improve autophagy - a cleanup process that helps sort aggregated proteins. I think this is a bad idea for ALS. I have C9orf72 mutation. New data suggests that this mutation inhibits the autophagy process in the starvation state. Other data shows that a glucose hypometabolism triggers a stress response enzyme called GCN2 kinase, and with my mutation it stimulates the production of neurotoxic dipeptides. Dr Ikjae Lee in Columbia also showed that ALS (not just C9orf72) patients on a 'healthy' low carb diet fared much worse (2x faster progression) than those on a diet with plenty of high glycemic index foods. I have always had a sweet tooth so I am indulging this now. My ALS started after a period of intermittent fasting. Others in my network have also reported this.

Hi Vivienne,

Thank you for the heads up. I have a 4 day juice fast in the story. Shortly after the fast my thigh muscle started to ripple and my toes began moving on their own. I already had slight balance difficulties, like I had gotten off a ship, and this shifted into a worsening limp. That makes sense with the research you have mentioned.

How are you getting along with your medicines? I think I am following you although not, as yet, with the triumeq. I seem to be holding my own in places. I do an ALSFRS-R each month and I have dropped 2 points over 5 months, with the last 3 holding at 42. I don´t know if that means anything because I have felt weaker than the scores. Mind, I am taking so many supplements I will probably die from eating that hard coating that all the powders are in.
