Hello all,

About 1 month ago I noticed that I had some numbness on the outside of my left foot. I went to the doctor for blood tests and an MRI of my back, but everything came back clear, and so I am being sent for an EMG. In the mean time, I developed constant twitching (fasticulations) in both my calves that occasionally spreads to my upper body. Furthermore, I have noticed some weakness in the toes of my left foot (particularly my little toe, but more generally in all toes when it comes to bending and flexing), even though the numbness in my foot has mostly disappeared.

Like a lot of posters here, I'm finding myself pretty much consumed by stress and anxiety. Particularly the weakness in my toes - I'm wondering if I noticed the foot-drop weakness very early and that it is now spreading from my toes-up. That, coupled with the twitching in my calves/occasionally upper body has me really worried. Ultimately I know I will just have to wait for the EMG for a more definite answer, but that is still several weeks away.

Any advice you might have would be so much appreciated.

The numbness does not sound like ALS, the twitching could be as a result or worrying. Try not to fall and wait out the appointment we have all been there it took nearly 2 years for them to find out what was wrong with me.

IRISH: ALS doesn't feel numb.
Twitching is so common, it isn't diagnostic of anything.
It's not unusual for the little toe to have little movement.

ALS is so rare, you really shouldn't even consider it. Just get your EMG and let your doctors figure it out. If I were you, I'd find a more common disease to worry about.
