I’m writing about my husband. He’s is 35 years old, has always worked out 3-4 days a week and takes weekly jujitsu classes.

2 weeks ago he told me he was experiencing muscles spasms/ twitching in his left pectoral muscle and wasn’t sure why. Now, 3 days ago he has lost muscle function in his left pectoral. When he flexes the muscles they stay completely soft, while they right side is hard. He can barely do 1 push up because of it. Normally he could do 20 pushups. Even when he doesn’t flex, it feels like the left pectoral muscle is already less than his right side.

There is no pain. He saw his primary doctor yesterday who is referring him to an orthopedic doctor and chiropractor.

I can’t help but worry about this being ALS. Any advice or clarity from others who can relate would be helpful.

One thing to mention— he did strain his neck while taking jujitsu a couple weeks ago. I am hoping this is the reason for the pectoral muscle loss. But I’ve never experienced something like this myself. It’s all so strange.

That would be a pretty fast onset, in an unusual muscle. The idea that he damaged his cervical spine, even temporarily, affecting the pec is certainly a possibility, as is a clot or bleed.

I would stay away from chiro in this instance.

Thank you for your response. He has an appointment with the orthopedic next week. So I guess we’ll just take it from there
