:-(Hello
Wish I could say I am glad to be here but am happy to find folks that know what i am going through. My DH was diagnosed last thursday with ALS. This road has gone on over a year starting with ruling out sinus infection, tumor, stroke, allergies. Finally with the testing of current it was clear his problem is ALS. His speech and swallowing have been a problem for over a year and getting worse, today I watched him walk and noticed a clear change in his gait. He has also been affected by the outburst of laughing and crying, as well as mood wise his is very short tempered and easily forgets things. This is not the man I married 18 years ago. He goes between understanding what is going to happening then going back into denial. For myself I have gone between fear, confusion and ashamed at the thoughts I had prior to his diagnosis. But knowing does make it better and I can still love him, but not love what this ALS is doing to my man. He is 66, I am 50 with physical disablities where I can no longer be the amazon woman I once was. Worst is we have a 11 year old son. He knows the prognosis, but I want to do my best to keep him a kid and not a care taker. I just feel so overwhelmed about things I need to get set up with the PCP, then MDA, and ALS society.
I look forward to learning from your experiences, and gaining strength from all, as well as offer my shoulder and support to you all.
Best wishes
