Hi, I am new to all this, I live in England with my husband Brian and my son Philip who is type 1 Diabetes, The reason for me joining this site is my concern for my husband who is only 43 years old. My father died in May last year at our home after a long illness, he had lung and Lymphoma cancer, during the past year my husband who has always been clumsy seemed to get worse , i put it down to stress, then things became worse he tripped over nothing, spilled things knocked or kicked things over, fell off ladders then got run over but was not hurt, he broke the mans windscreen but ended up with cuts and bruises. He trapped my arm in the car door would walk into doors or furniture, but had a persistant wheezing cough. The doctor did a vast array of blood tests and they all came back clear, but he said his lungs were so bad Bronchitus he sent him for a chest xray his peak flow is 310 to 380. Chest X ray was clear, but then he started to miss his mouth when eating spilling food down his shirt, Then he lost the dog! started to have emotional out bursts, was feeling angry for no reson or would be upset over nothing , he had cramps in his back and legs and complained of been tired all the time so would often have a nap in the early evening , but lasting 2-3 hours, The doctor said he was worried so sent him for a brain scan, It came back clear, but now he chokes on drinks of tea, one day it came back up his nose, the doctor said he has a lack of muscle coordination wakness in left side and now muscle fasciculations? waiting for neurologist?

Hi Beverly. Your husband does sound like an accident waiting for a place to happen. He does have some strange symptoms that came about rather quickly which usually points away from MND. Try not to fret too much until you see the Neuro. Any idea when that will be?

AL.

To Al, thanks for your reply, the answer to your question is we are waiting for an appointment, if its not here in the next week i am going to book a private one, we can claim it back through his medical insurance, your right when you say its an accident waiting to happen,He has damaged the car on numerous occasions, he drove off at the car wash with the brush and hose wrapped around the wheels and broke the bumper off etc. He has muscle spasms and a tremor in his left hand when resting although only slight, i cannot count the number of pots, plates and glasses he has broken over the past year, he even throws out the cutlery when we have take away, he breaks keys in locks, then tries to blame someone else, he fell out walking the dog yeasterday and came home covered in mud, he ran over the lawnmower wire twice, fell off the ladders in the garden when cutting the Lyandi's nearly cutting his hand off. he cannot hold a cup straight he spills it all over, we now have laminate floors fitted i had to get rid of the carpets, he has nearly electrocuted himself twice, left the gas on etc, i live in constant fear, I love him so much but do not know why he sits and bites picks and twitches, recently he has started to slur more, if he has a drink you think he is drunk but he has only had one? I can go on and on , where do i post all this to get any answers?

Hi everyone. I'm new to the site. My mom was diagnosed with ALS 1/2007 and within 3 months was on a ventilator. My step-dad now takes care of her at home and I am there everyday after work and on weekends.

Welcome Amatop. Sorry about your mom. Hope we can help.

AL

Thanks Al! We have been through a lot in the past 3yrs and I hope that my experiences can help others as well. :)

Hello Everyone,

I'm a newbie to the site, although my husband has been nosing around for a few months. I started speaking funny at times in January 09, right after I had a lot of dental work done. Oral surgeon initially blamed it on me biting my salivary glands on the inside of my cheek. My words got slightly slurry by time April rolled around. Went to a local neurologist, who after a battery of tests including an EMG, MRI, MRA, told me "Go back to your dentist, I can find nothing wrong". Instead we went to New York-Presbyterian - Cornell, where after being initially diagnosed with MG, was ultimately told, on July 1, 2009" I have good news for you, you don’t have MG, but you do have ALS (like that's good news?)

Fortunately we live in New York City, and have good doctors. I was given this sentence 6 months after the first symptom. Subsequent EMG's show it's in my left hand (same hand that has had carpal tunnel for 10 years), and also in my left ankle, with no presentation. DX: Bulbr Onset ALS. On Rilutek. Still working, and in good shape so far. I go every 3 months to an ALS Center, to get checked out and hear all dismal news.

I'm still mad. I walked out alive from 2 bombings at the WTC, only to have this? I know life's not fair, but this stinks!

Thanks or letting me vent.

Welcome to the forum, Marcia Mary! I hope your progression comes to a snail's pace. No! I hope your progression comes to a crippled-up, lame, snail's pace.

Oh, shucks! How about a dead snail's pace?

Hello This is paul, my spouse Beth was diagnosed with ALS in June of 2005 and was symptomatic since Oct 2004. At this time beth is maintaining well, she is on a feeding tube ,is confined to her wheelchair I generally have to drive it for her she is in the progress if programming her Dynavox communication device but it is going very slow. the past few nights she hasnt slept well, and as i wake up to ask her what she needs she cannot communicate her needs so at that point it is a guessing game, a process of elimination until she finally nods her head OK. Beth and I have two daughters together. Paige is 14, Emily is 7. Between the girls and Beth I stay really busy. I am also a biology student working on my Second year, 1st Anatomy and Physiology. i have to go for now but look foreward to hearing from all of you and making some new friends. TTYL
