Hi everyone. What wonderfully helpful comments, every one. It enriches my soul to read words that are so filled with such insight, honesty and caring. Funny you mentioned travel Mike, my daughters (15 and a half and 17) have the opportunity to go to Europe next year on a school trip. It is expensive and my first thought was no (as I thought of all the unforeseen expenses we need to save for), but when my youngest told my PALS about it his face lit up like it hasn't in years! The minute I left the room he waggled his eyebrows at her so much she couldn't work out what was going on. Then she realised he was saying yes! Well, you cannot imagine the excitement that spread through our house. It is incredible what hope does to a person, to a family. It doesn't matter that we are not going, it fills our spirits (most importantly my PALS) with joy that our girls are going to have this experience. All the sadness and gut wrenching sense of loss that has surrounded any talk of holidays up until now as been replaced with excitement and expectation. Our girls are looking forward to the future for the first time in years.
